Useful reading skills Thursday, December 4, 2008

In yesterday's class we talked about useful strategies when you read a text that you find a bit difficult to get through. Together we came up with the following:

  • underline difficult words as you read, but keep reading and look them up after you have finished the chapter. If you get stuck looking up too many words you lose the context and you might get too bored to actually finish the book
  • write down difficult words and expressions on a piece of paper and go back to look them up when you have finished reading the chapter
  • try to focus on the general ideas in the text, not on the details or individual words
  • summarize the most important events of the chapter in your head or in writing in just a few sentences. If you have trouble doing this you need to go back and read some of it again
  • use your logic to try to figure out what is important in the text
  • focus on one paragraph or one chapter at a time
  • be confident and keep reading, many situations will be explained later in the book and you will understand it eventually
  • go back an re-read some parts again, sometimes that helps a lot

In today's class I wanted to focus on another very important reading strategy that you all have, but you may not always think about it. That is your ability to predict or to guess what will happen next in the story or in any text, really.

We looked at a simple dialogue in which I had erased a few lines. Drawing on our previous experiences we quickly figured out that the dialogue took place in a restaurant and the two people were a costumer and a waiter. Even though we had very little written information it was easy for us to figure out the context.

We also looked at the opening paragraphs of two stories and we discussed possible scenarios for the next paragraph. We came to the conclusion that we all had different ideas of what would happen next, because we all have different experiences in life. We interpret a story differently and that is a good thing!

We agreed on that some outcomes are more likely than others, and in fact some outcomes are possible, but highly unlikely, both because they are unlikey to happen in real life and because there were no indications of that outcome previously in the text.

The point of the discussion was: make use of the knowledge and experiences that you already have when you are reading a text and try to predict or guess what will happen next. If you practise doing that you will find that reading becomes a lot easier and also more fun.

-i´m miserable as anything inside . (bedrövligt)
- cheeky buggers .(ha tidelag)
-kitty says shifting her bottom crossly. (kraftig)
- i say and she purses up like she´s sucking lemons. (dra ihop)
-then she starts on about fraudulent statements and that. (bedräglig)
-and she´s wearing this butterup yellow smock (fjäska för) och (skyddsrock)
-maybe they´ll still twig . (förstå)

Someons else's baby chapter 4-7

I really like the second part I mean chapter 4-7. Many things happened and she have many decision in front of her. This book is very interesting and I can´t stop reading it.

My word list:

-when she left people came from all over bearing gifts like the flipping magi. (sammanhang) (snabb)

-When we get to Bristol I'm half expecting this heavy lecture from Auntie Olivebut she gaves me a hug and says it's lovely to see me. (föreläsa)

-Wonders will never cease. (uppföra)

-Flowers written in the pattern too and a green candlewick bedspread and a pale green carpet. (mönster) ( hittar inte) (sängöverkast)

-I've got another appointment next week which is totally shonky but at least if you're pregnant it's free. (hittar inte)

-What about housing benefit?" I say all chrisp. "And income support?"(bostadsbyggare) (dra nytta av) (krispig) (inkomst)

-Remember the poem in school,"it says.(dikt, vers)

-Can I have a ride on your trike?"Kim pipes up next door.( hittar inte) ( hittar inte)

-What a relief. But it's early days yet, maybe they'll still twig I'm not entitled? (avlastning) (förstå) (berättigad)

-You still here, "I say all jokey though I'm miserable as anything inside. (trist, usel)

-She starts on about fraudulent statesments and that. (bedräglig, falsk)

-Except polluting the air. (hittar inte)

-She smiles apologetically, just the way mum smiles. (Hittar inte)

First I think I shouldn't be here, I don't belong in this place. But then I think I've got to stick up for myself like Kitty Madden does, get my rights.

In the begining she was very uncertain but now she began to thing more about herself. Her mother always do what her dad wants her to do, she never stood up for herself. The girl was very tired of that weakness her mother has. The mother like Billy more than the girl and tha mother failed her because Billy has something important. Then the girl told her opinion for the first time and I really like this parts when the characters go forward and grow as a person. You have to stand up for yourself no one will do that for you, you have to do it yourself.

Someone else´s baby! capter 4-7

1, Having a baby on your own isn´t a calamity nowadays you know. (?)
2,Honestly sha had enough talc and nappies and little vests and jacket for quins.(?)
3,And ha gets in the car and drives off with a squeal and a squela of tyres.( skvallra)
4,The spare roomwitch makes it extra decent of her.( anständig)
5,She tweaks the pram away and her eyes are all wild and peculiar like am trying to steal it or something. (besynnerlig)

" I have decided"; I say "I want to have it adopted". But in my head another voice is saying the oppisite "No you don´t" says this inside voice "You don´t at all."

I can understand that she is confused, but it seems that she is listeing to everybothy else except herselfe. She needs to listen to herselfe otherwise she will regret her decision.

Hallelujah the Amanda Jenssen version

There were no really good versions of Jeff Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah on YouTube so I decided to post this version by Swedish singer Amanda Jenssen instead from her 2007 Swedish Idol performance. I like her version a lot. It's emotional and real.

If you want to find lyrics to songs that you like just do a Google search and type the title of the song + lyrics and you will find the lyrics to any song you like. You can also search the songs on YouTube. Music is a great way to learn English!

Class tomorrow at 10:15 Tuesday, December 2, 2008

I will see you all tomorrow in class. We will catch up on your reading of the novels. I am also going through my music collection to find a song for tomorrow's class. You'll see what I come up with.
